Château de Fontaine-Française
Dating from the tenth or eleventh century, the château de Fontaine-Française was when built a 100-foot-high keep with drawbridge, 4 curtain walls flanked at the corners by 4 large towers. Built between 1754 and 1758 on the site of the old eleventh-century fortress that sheltered Henry IV after the battle of 5 June 1595 that pitted him against the League helped by the Spanish.
This château was built by Monsieur de Saint-Julien beside a magnificent body of water, the Pagosse pond, which borders a French-style park. Many writers like Voltaire or Madame de Staël stayed there.
