Château d'Anjony

Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Château d'Anjony stands at Tournemire, a member of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, in the Cantal. It was built around 1430 by Louis d'Anjony, a companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc, and has been lived in by the same family ever since. It is listed as a historic monument.

The keep looks austere from outside. Inside, every room is decorated with 16th-century frescoes inspired by the Italian Renaissance: the Hall of the Nine Worthies shows nine knights, including Charlemagne, King Arthur and Alexander the Great, while the chapel is decorated with scenes of the Passion of Christ. The interiors are furnished. In the 18th century a more comfortable wing was added to the medieval tower.

The visit is guided and lasts about an hour. It is well worth following with a stroll through the flower-filled village of Tournemire.
