Château de Saint-Chamant

Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

In a remarkable setting above a valley opening onto the Cantal mountains, the Château de Saint-Chamant, a registered historic monument, has a 15th-century keep of military origin, one of the fiefs of Robert de Balsac, the king's chamberlain and seneschal of Agenais and Gascony.

In the 17th century the Lignerac family, future Dukes of Caylus, built a large main building that houses a remarkable collection of Aubusson tapestries. Since 1783 the present family has kept the ensemble very much alive. Besides the Aubussons, visitors can admire 17th-century Flemish tapestries, a 17th-century altarpiece in the chapel, the grand staircase and the panelling.
