Château Saint-Etienne
The Château Saint-Étienne is a medieval castle on a hill at 685 metres overlooking the town of Aurillac, in the Cantal. The original castle of the father of Saint Géraud, founder of the abbey, it then belonged to the Abbey of Aurillac until the French Revolution, which sold all its property as national assets. Bequeathed in 1845 to the diocese of Saint-Flour, it has had several uses since.
The fortified tower, which defended the town in the Middle Ages, overlooks the plain from its promontory. The castle suffered many military assaults over the centuries but was rebuilt several times. It houses the Aurillac museum devoted to volcanoes.
