Yèvre-le-Châtel

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire

Set on a spur, on the boundary of the former bishoprics of Orléans and Sens, whose frontier was marked by the Essonne and the Rimarde, Yèvre-le-Châtel was fortified very early.

From the tenth century, Yèvre was one of the possessions of the abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire. It is known that on several occasions the monks of Fleury complained to the King, Hugh Capet, about the exactions of Baron Arnoul de Yèvre. It was no doubt to make people forget her husband's excesses that his wife, Lucinde, founded within the castle enclosure an abbey under the invocation of Saint Gault, one of the saints of Brittany whose relics had been brought to the region by monks fleeing the Norman invasion. The chapel of this abbey is today the parish church of Yèvre-le-Châtel.
