Seaquarium - Musée de la mer

Gard, Occitanie

The Seaquarium is an aquarium in Le Grau-du-Roi, in Gard, on the Mediterranean shore. Opened in 1989 under the name Seaquarium Institut Marin, it presents more than 350 species of marine animals, including about thirty species of sharks and rays, as well as seals and sea lions. The areas are devoted to Mediterranean and tropical environments.

When it opened, the establishment stood out for an underwater tunnel for observing sharks, one of the first of its kind in Europe. The Requinarium, inaugurated in 2009, extends this interest in sharks: it presents 25 species in about one million litres of sea water spread over six tanks. A panoramic amphitheatre lets you watch the seals and sea lions being fed.

The Seaquarium also has an educational role, with school programmes, themed days and science outreach on Mediterranean biodiversity and ocean protection. In 2024, it obtained recognition as a centre for scientific, technical and industrial culture.
