Sant Antonino

Haute-Corse, Corse

The village's origin is said to go back to the ninth century, according to the legend of Ugo Colonna and his companions. At that time "castra" appeared in Balagne which, set at strategic points, let their occupants watch the valleys.

Today, the village has kept its look of an eagle's-nest acropolis. The tour of the village follows narrow lanes lined with majestic dwellings and passes under many vaults. Around the bend of a staircase appears a bread oven or an old press. On the threshold of some houses two aces of spades are engraved, a memory of the Middle Ages. At the top are the remains of old fortifications and part of the keep, from which you discover the whole of Balagne planted with olive trees, with the sparkling sea on the horizon. Downstream stands, isolated, the parish church which holds an organ of 1744 signed Battista Pomposi of Pistoia. Away from the village, the confraternity chapel is a shepherds' chapel.
