Saint-Jean-de-Côle
Overlooking the village square, the château de Marthonie combines in its two wings sharing a magnificent straight-flight staircase the elegance of the Renaissance with the rigour of the classical period. Adjoining a priory with cloister and ambulatory, the Romano-Byzantine-style church was built in the twelfth century. It holds fine paintings and a polychrome stone Virgin of the sixteenth century. At the end of the village, near the old mill, a medieval bridge with cutwaters spans the river Côle. This prestigious architectural ensemble is completed by the village's old houses, some of them half-timbered.
