Limeuil

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Formerly, the village occupied a strategic site on the border between English-held Guyenne and the kingdom of France. Long before, Limeuil had known troubled hours defending itself against the Vikings. Today, the village stretches from the sandy banks of the river to the remains of the castle and ramparts of which only three fortified gates remain. From there, you reach the town built on a steep slope. Along the lanes, houses with sloping roofs show their stone façades marked with coats of arms. At the top of the hill stands the church of Sainte-Catherine, whose choir dates from the fourteenth century. Below, a double bridge spans the Vézère and the Dordogne, and in the valley nestles the Romanesque chapel of Saint-Martin from the twelfth century.
