Monpazier

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

This thirteenth-century fortified town founded by Edward I of England has seen some thirty of its buildings listed as historic monuments. It appears as the purest of bastides. Its three gates open onto streets lined with ochre and white houses where everything is harmony, down to the dimensions of the façades, identical for these delightful dwellings.

Under the covered market, you can still see the fifteenth-century grain measures. With its Gothic arcaded galleries, its cafés and its pleasant shops, Place des Cornières — heart and masterpiece of Monpazier — is the ideal place to enjoy a sunny afternoon... as well as the local specialities: strawberries, chestnuts or mushrooms.
