Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert
At the confluence of the Verdus and the Hérault, this village grew around an abbey founded in 804 by Saint Guilhem to house a piece of the Cross offered by Charlemagne. Of the old abbey, only a very fine eleventh-century church can be seen today. Some of the columns and sculptures of the cloister are now in the Cloisters museum in New York.
The village, which keeps remains of its fortifications, is overlooked by the ruins of a twelfth-century castle from where you discover a magnificent panorama.
