Montpellier is a French commune, the prefecture of the Hérault département. The city lies on a major route linking Spain to the west with Italy to the east, a short distance from the Mediterranean.

Its nearest neighbours are Béziers, 69 kilometres to the south-west, and Nîmes, 52 kilometres to the north-east. Its inhabitants are called Montpelliérains.
