Peyre

Aveyron, Occitanie

Peyre is a troglodyte village of the Aveyron, about seven kilometres from Millau, on the banks of the Tarn. It is attached to the commune of Comprégnac and has been among the Most Beautiful Villages of France since 2003.

The houses are backed against a tufa cliff, in which some are partly hollowed out. There are also buildings in tufa stone quarried on the spot. The stepped lanes, called calades, link the dwellings.

The church of Saint-Christophe, of Romanesque origin and fortified in the sixteenth or seventeenth century depending on sources, is itself partly troglodyte. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1936 and hosts exhibitions in summer.

From the Rocher car park and the belvedere, the view takes in the Millau viaduct, which crosses the Tarn valley about two kilometres from the village. The site is visited on foot, along the calades and passages under the cliff.
