La Couvertoirade

Aveyron, Occitanie

With authorisation from Raymond Berenguer, count of Barcelona and prince of the kingdom of Aragon, the Templars spread strongholds in the twelfth century: La Couvertoirade became the flagship of the triad of Larzac commanderies. The only Templar remnant of the village, the castle borrows its defensive system from the fortifications of Asia Minor. Declared heretics by Philip the Fair, the Knights of the Temple gave way to the Hospitallers. In the fifteenth century, they warded off attacks by routiers by ringing the old commandery with ramparts. The enclosure keeps its wall-walk, towers and two gates. It is by the north one that you reach the castle and the church. Of ogival style, the building is dated fourteenth century. The visit also leads to the mansions of Grailhe and La Scipione (seventeenth century).
