Musée lapidaire d'Avignon
The Lapidary museum, or Galerie des Antiques of the Calvet museum, presents the Greek, Roman, Gallo-Roman and early Christian collections, in a presentation gradually being renewed.
The archaeological collections of the Calvet museum have been installed since 1933 in the Chapel of the Jesuit College built in the 17th century in the heart of Avignon. They are made up of Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Gallo-Roman and early Christian pieces including a magnificent series of Attic, Corinthian and Italiot vases; but also many objects of daily life such as funerary furniture, vases, glassware, jewellery and bronzes... The whole forms an exceptional historical and artistic treasure built up since 1810 from the bequest of Esprit Calvet, acquisitions and gifts from the State, as well as objects from archaeological digs at Vaison-la-Romaine or from old European collections.
