Musée de l'horlogerie de Morteau
The Morteau Watchmaking Museum, in the Haut-Doubs, is housed in the château Pertusier, a listed building of 1576, at 17 rue de la Glapiney. The building served as a gendarmerie from 1938 to 1985 before becoming a museum.
The museum was founded in 1985 by a former watchmaker, Constant Vaufrey, and is devoted to the history of watchmaking in Franche-Comté since the eighteenth century. About 2,500 pieces, from donations by individuals and companies, purchases and exchanges, trace the whole history of time measurement.
You see watchmakers' tools and machines, Comtoise clocks, pocket watches, cartel clocks and astronomical clocks. The masterpiece is an astronomical clock of 1855, a unique example, accompanied by a rare wooden clock of 1680. Many pieces still work, which gives the route a special atmosphere.
The place interests mechanics enthusiasts, families and visitors to the Pays horloger, a region marked by a rich past of watch and clock manufacture.
