Ecomusée - Maison Michaud
The Maison Michaud eco-museum is at Chapelle-des-Bois, in the Haut-Doubs, at about 1,100 metres, in the Combe des Cives. The farmhouse with its great 'tuyé' chimney, dated 1683, is typical of mountain architecture and holds the 'Valeurs Parc' label of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park.
In about 800 m² of exhibition space, nearly 2,000 objects show the life of local farmers: farm areas, then living rooms, working methods of the time, winter crafts such as making wooden shingles, and the peat bogs. Part of the route covers the Franco-Swiss border, smuggling, boundary stones and the Resistance.
Workshops and demonstrations are offered at certain times: bread, butter or cancoillotte cheese making, weaving and gardening. Guided tours are organised for groups. The site interests families, school groups and lovers of ethnography and sustainable housing.
