Mémorial de l'abolition de l'esclavage

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire

The Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery is a French memorial in Nantes, in the Loire-Atlantique.

Devoted to the slave trade in Nantes and in the world, to slavery and its abolition, this place to visit, in what was one of the main slave-trading ports of France, was inaugurated in March 2012.

The memorial was set up under a landscaped promenade of 7,000 m²; the exhibition area, almost at the level of the Loire, evokes the holds of slave ships. On a landscaped esplanade, two thousand commemorative plaques recall the slave-trading expeditions that left Nantes in the eighteenth century, as well as the main trading posts in Africa and America. A meditative route, punctuated by quotations from around the world relating to slavery, is set into the Loire quay.
