Les Gorges de la Frau
They take their name from the gorges of "fright". For about five kilometres, a stony, winding path seems to slip into the bowels of the earth... At the most spectacular moments, you will be overlooked by more than four hundred metres of dizzying rock. Here and there, the water has hollowed and polished the rock as if to recall the power it had to make such a gash in the mountain! And do not think that this era is entirely over: if the stream often disappears under the stones and the place seems very dry, a big storm can turn this desert into a terrible torrent! At the beginning of the century, it was even wanted to build a road in the gorges to ease the work of the charcoal burners who carried the fruit of their labour down on mule-back by this rough path. It went badly for the builders: a violent storm in a single night devastated the work done, carrying away the walls and breaking the bridges... The example was enough and work never resumed. Since then, it has been chosen to leave this little corner of paradise to hikers and a few wild animals.
