Château de Puivert

Aude, Occitanie

At six hundred metres' altitude, on top of the hill overlooking the village to the east, firmly set on its "pech" in the middle of a vast cirque crowned with firs, the feudal castle of Puivert (Puyvert – Puy-Verd) outlines its proud keep and dismantled walls. Its proud towers were once mirrored in the waters of a vast lake now vanished. Located in the southern, highest part of the Kercorb, it has dominated for centuries this land that stretches along the right bank of the Hers. In the twelfth century, the Troubadours held their "courts of love" there. Aragonese soldiers ensured its defence and the Cathars were well received there. The Albigensian Crusade, in 1210, was a great moment of its history. The lords of Bruyères, having become masters of the castle and the surrounding "country", have since inscribed the notable events in stone. History lovers, the curious and tourists, French and foreign, climb, each year in greater numbers, the gently sloping path that leads to the foot of the fortress. Its formidable mass, as well as the beauty of the site, never fail to impress them. Like them, let us set off to discover times gone by.
