le ravin du Mal Infernet

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Mal Infernet ravine lies in the Esterel massif, in the commune of Saint-Raphaël, in the Var. It corresponds to a stretch of the small coastal river Agay, which bears several names depending on the place (Grenouillet, Mal Infernet, Couche de l'Âne ravine) before reaching the bay of Agay. This watercourse of about ten kilometres rises in the Esterel, north of Théoule-sur-Mer.

The walk generally starts from the Col de Belle Barbe, near Agay, and follows a track that sinks into a narrow canyon of red rocks of volcanic origin, with tormented shapes that justify its name. The ochre and red tints of the rock contrast with the green of the vegetation and the blue of the sky. The route leads to the site of the former Lac de l'Écureuil, a reservoir that long fed the ravine; the dam was destroyed following an ONF decision in 2009, for safety reasons. The area is a natural space where access can be restricted in summer in case of fire risk.
