Le Puy de Dôme

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Puy de Dôme is a dormant volcano of the Chaîne des Puys, in the Massif Central. It is about fifteen kilometres from Clermont-Ferrand and gave its name to the Puy-de-Dôme département.

The Chaîne des Puys became a listed site in 2000.

The Puy de Dôme itself is part of the Grands Sites de France network and received, in early 2008, the "Grand Site de France" label.

You can reach the summit of the Puy de Dôme by electric rack railway. The line along the mountainside offers a comfortable 15-minute journey and reveals a striking panorama of the Chaîne des Puys, the Limagne plain, Clermont-Ferrand and the Sancy massif.

Once at the summit station, you only have a few metres left to discover the "Giant of the Domes", a mythical site, flagship symbol of Auvergne.
