Volcan de lemptégy

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Lemptégy volcano is an old Strombolian cone of the Chaîne des Puys, near Saint-Ours in the Puy-de-Dôme. Worked as a pozzolana quarry from the mid-twentieth century, it offers a unique cross-section letting you observe the structure of a volcano from inside. Since 1994, the site has been transformed into a volcanological discovery park open to the public. Guided tours by little train and on foot let you explore the crater and the chimneys of old lava flows. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Chaîne des Puys – Limagne fault tectonic arena".
