Le Lac d'Oô

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie

Lac d'Oô occupies a high-mountain cirque of the Astau valley, in the commune of Oô, near Bagnères-de-Luchon. At about 1,500 metres' altitude, it covers about forty hectares and reaches nearly 70 metres' depth. Of glacial origin, it was raised by a gravity dam built between 1918 and 1921, which feeds a hydroelectric plant. It was once called Lac de Séculéjo.

Its great attraction is the waterfall crashing into the lake, about 275 metres high, coming from Lac d'Espingo above it. You climb up on foot by the GR 10 from the Granges d'Astau, in about an hour's walk, on an easy path. A refuge-inn stands on the left bank near the dam. The site, crossed by the Neste d'Oô, belongs to a Natura 2000 area and draws many hikers.
