Le gouffre de la fage
The Gouffre de la Fage, also called the Abîme de la Fage, opens on the Causse de Martel, at Noailles, in Corrèze. It formed in Middle to Upper Jurassic limestones. You go down by a staircase through a large doline born of the collapse of the vault. The explored network reaches about 705 metres, of which a developed part of about 407 metres, with a vertical depth of 27 metres.
The route shows jellyfish-shaped curtains, areas rich in stalactites and stalagmites and an Organ Hall, where some concretions ring when struck, like a xylophone. In the last hall, excavations have uncovered prehistoric bones. The cavity shelters several bat colonies, with eleven species recorded in winter and four in summer. It is listed as a ZNIEFF and is part of the Natura 2000 network. It is the only cave open to the public in the Limousin.
