Collonges-la-Rouge
What an extraordinary medieval vision: all red and pink, Collonges is first of all a walled town. Its builders knew how to exploit the treasure of red sandstone from the Habitarelle massif that overlooks it. The village enclosure keeps two of its gates through which the walnut oil and wine trade passed from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century.
The town was essentially aristocratic, as the coats of arms testify; manor houses, towers and turrets abound. The construction of the church and the priory founded by the monks of Charroux goes back to a distant past, the eighth century exactly. This town, whose blood seems to beat "at the surface of the stone", is an absolute must-visit.
