Uzerche
Uzerche, in the Corrèze, is nicknamed the 'Pearl of the Limousin'. The town stands on a rocky spur enclosed by a bend of the Vézère. A local saying goes that 'whoever has a house in Uzerche has a castle in the Limousin', a reference to the many turreted houses and mansions in its centre.
Its heritage includes the Porte Bécharie, the last of the nine gates of the old town wall, the abbey church of Saint-Pierre, an important church of Limousin Romanesque art, and a rare 16th-century half-timbered house on Rue Pierre-Chalaud. By the river, the Château Bécharie, the Hôtel Joyet de Maubec and the Château Pontier are reflected in the water.
The old centre is explored on foot through narrow lanes, and guided tours are organised. The Vézère also invites walks, and canoe trips are offered on the river.
