Saint-Robert

Corrèze, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The village stands on the site of an old Merovingian town. On the Saint-Robert plateau, a few remains of an enclosure surrounding the monastery of its Romanesque abbey church.

The prosperous dressed-stone buildings, castels and turreted houses were in their time dwellings of notables. The fortified church keeps almost the whole of its twelfth-century structure. The ambulatory once showed pilgrims to Compostela the relics of the saints. On the capitals are carved scenes laden with biblical symbols. A life-size thirteenth-century Christ, carved in wood, recalls the intensity of medieval faith. Saint-Robert, a town on the borders of Périgord, was itself the scene of violent religious clashes.
