Les pans d'ardoise Travassac

Corrèze, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Pans de Travassac, in the Corrèze, are magnificent slate seams worked in the open air since the 17th century. An interesting discovery trail and a small museum have been set up here.

The seven slate layers, a few metres thick, have the curious feature of being vertical and are separated by six layers of quartzite. As the slate was extracted to a depth of 200 metres, only huge slabs of quartzite, a very hard and unworkable stone, can be seen today. Passages known as 'perces' were laboriously cut through the quartzite with hammer and chisel.
