Tulle

Corrèze, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Squeezed into the narrow valley carved by the Corrèze river, Tulle stretches lengthwise over the slopes of seven hills, which earned it its nickname. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a former abbey church with a slender Gothic bell tower, dominates the old town and its medieval cloister, now part of the Musée du Cloître, which traces local history.

The town also owes its industrial reputation to the arms factory created under Louis XVI and then to accordion making, a craft still carried on by the Maugein factory. The steep lanes and stairways of the old centre, locally called 'degrés', reflect the particular relief that shaped the unusual layout of this mountain prefecture.
