Brive-la-Gaillarde

Corrèze, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The gateway from the Limousin to the Périgord and the Quercy, Brive-la-Gaillarde, in the Corrèze, owes its nickname to its inhabitants' resistance to a 15th-century siege. Its pedestrian town centre, with golden limestone façades, radiates around the collegiate church of Saint-Martin, whose tall 14th-century Gothic bell tower dominates the surrounding roofs.

Every Saturday a well-known market fills the market hall and nearby streets, celebrating a region rich in food specialities, from foie gras to Limousin strawberries and Périgord walnuts. Brive combines a provincial way of life with commercial energy at the crossroads of several south-western terroirs.
