Château de Turenne

Corrèze, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Built from the 11th century by the viscounts of Comborn at the top of the ridge, the fortress of Turenne, in the Corrèze, survives only as imposing remains. Its demolition, ordered by Louis XV and auctioned in 1753, owed nothing to the revolutionaries. Today only three elements remain.

Defending the castle entrance, the massive rectangular keep dates from the 12th century. The guardroom can be visited (Louis XVIII furniture and a collection of salt chests). Opposite the keep, the round tower known as Caesar's Tower (12th-13th centuries) served as a lookout. A spiral staircase leads to its top, with very wide views far beyond the Dordogne valley to the south.
