Lavardin

Loir-et-Cher, Centre-Val de Loire

Buried in greenery on the banks of the Loir, Lavardin nestles at the foot of the impressive ruins of its castle. To reach it, you cross an old Gothic bridge. The village is truly picturesque. You should wander the streets lined with old houses with fine slate or tile roofs. Some date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and have kept pretty mullioned windows, pointed dormers and fine half-timbering. You should go and admire the town hall, and very near the church of early Romanesque style with a square porch tower. You will also see cellars with ivy-covered walls, then you will climb up to the castle. Ruined by Henry IV's troops, it nevertheless keeps a proud look with its 26-metre keep (eleventh century), its curtain walls, its remains of towers and enclosures. How sweet life seems in this pretty village.
