Lac du Goléon

Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Lac du Goléon is a high-altitude glacial lake, at about 2,450 metres, in the commune of Villar-d'Arêne, on the boundary of the Hautes-Alpes and Isère. It faces one of the most famous panoramas of the Écrins massif: La Meije, which peaks at 3,983 metres and is among the emblematic summits of the French Alps. The Goléon refuge is near the lake.

Access is on foot by routes from La Grave, notably from Les Hières or Les Terrasses, at about 1,760 to 1,780 metres' altitude. The path climbs a small valley alternating grassy zones and scree, with a significant climb that makes it a sporty hike to plan for the day. The site is a popular meeting point for hikers and photographers, who come to seek the reflection of La Meije in the calm waters of the lake and enjoy sumptuous views of the massif.
