La Grave
La Grave is a village in the Hautes-Alpes, at the foot of La Meije, in the Oisans massif. Its territory, mostly high-mountain, includes several protected natural areas, part of them in the Écrins national park. It is renowned for mountaineering, off-piste skiing in the Meije valleys and several cultural events, such as the Messiaen au pays de la Meije festival.
In the upper part of the village, narrow lanes are lined with sturdy stone houses. This "summits" quarter houses the Penitents' chapel, Romanesque in style, flanked by a mountain cemetery. In the lower part, the main street leads towards Briançon. To the south, the gaze discovers the Oisans massif, dominated by the north face of La Meije.
