Briançon ville forte du dauphiné

Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Former capital of the Republic of the Escartons in the fourteenth century then a military town of the Alps, Briançon is on the Route des Grandes Alpes, between Grenoble and Turin. Ramparts, collegiate church, gargoyles: it is an architectural jewel with an incomparable historical and architectural heritage in the Alps, which earns the highest town in Europe (1,326 m) the "Villes et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire" label. The picturesque lanes of the Cité Vauban are surrounded by prestigious valleys, the Clarée, the Guisane, the Queyras... Facing the Écrins national park, Briançon is also at the foot of the slopes of the Serre Chevalier ski area.
