Montgenèvre
Montgenèvre is a resort in the Hautes-Alpes at about 1,860 metres, on the pass of the same name, a few kilometres from the Italian border and about ten kilometres from Briançon. Skiing has been practised here since 1907, making it one of the oldest resorts in France.
It is the French gateway to the Via Lattea (Milky Way) ski area, which links Montgenèvre to the Italian resorts of Sestriere, Sansicario, Sauze d'Oulx, Claviere and Cesana. Sestriere, at the centre of the area, hosted events of the 2006 Winter Olympics. Together they form one of the largest international ski areas in the Alps.
The village, of mountain character, enjoys a climate influenced by the Italian side and is often sunny. In summer the pass is a starting point for hikes and bike rides in the Briançonnais, at the crossroads of France and Piedmont.
