Le Lac Vert (Lago Verde)

Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Lac Vert, also called Lago Verde, is at 1,834 metres' altitude in the Vallée Étroite, in the commune of Névache, in the Hautes-Alpes. Its green colour comes from the algae covering its bed, as well as from its shallow depth. A dense forest surrounds it, and submerged dead trees add to the charm of the landscape.

The Vallée Étroite belonged to Italy until 1947. The Treaty of Paris then awarded it to France, which attached it to Névache. This history explains why the signage of the path leading to the lake, from the long-distance route GR5-GR57, is still in Italian, with the words "lago Verde".

The valley, very close to the border, is a favourite hiking area in the massif. The lake lends itself to a stop by the water, among the larches, before setting off again on the surrounding paths.
