La Montagne des Singes
La Montagne des Singes is a park at Kintzheim, in Alsace, in the Bas-Rhin, at the foot of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle and about three-quarters of an hour from Strasbourg. Created in 1998 by nature enthusiasts, it presents Barbary macaques living in freedom in a forest of about 24 hectares.
The visitor walks on marked paths, without fences, among more than two hundred macaques. Contact is direct, and the possibilities for observing these monkeys' behaviour are many: play, grooming, social relations within the group. Commented food distributions, held regularly during the day, let you see them very close up with the keepers.
The park presents itself as a place of conservation and education: the Barbary macaque is an endangered species, and the visit aims to raise awareness of its protection and of biodiversity. A playful route, "In the Skin of a Monkey", offers to discover primates and their environment. It is an outing suited to families as well as nature lovers.
