Château de l'Ortenbourg
The castle of Ortenbourg, or Ortenberg, and the castle of Ramstein are two castles overlooking the commune of Scherwiller, 7 km from Sélestat, in the Bas-Rhin. The ruins stand on a rocky peak at 437 metres and have been listed as historic monuments since 1927.
Built in the 13th century, the Ortenbourg is one of the most imposing ruins in the Rhine valley. Specialists generally regard its defensive system as exemplary, with its shield wall and 32-metre keep offering six levels of firing positions. It is reached by a footpath from Scherwiller, with very fine views over the vineyards.
