Château de Spesbourg

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

The château du Spesbourg is a ruined fortress in the commune of Andlau, in the Bas-Rhin, in the heart of the forest, on the heights north of the village. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1967 and recalls by its general appearance a thirteenth-century castle.

The keep, about 24 metres, is accessible only by a high door. Two identical twin cylindrical towers emerge from the trees, at the prow and stern of a long stone ship, according to an image often used to describe the site. It is reached on foot by a forest path from Andlau or Barr, and the walk combines well with a visit to the villages of the Alsace vineyard.
