Château du Birkenfels
The castle of Birkenfels is in the Obernai forest, in the commune of Ottrot, in the Bas-Rhin. Its ruins have been listed as a historic monument since 16 November 1984. It was built around 1260 by Burkhard Beger, a vassal of the Bishop of Strasbourg.
The castle belonged to the Beger family until 1532, then to the Mundolsheim family until the French Revolution. It fell into ruin after the Thirty Years' War and was ceded to the town of Obernai; it is now part of the Obernai-Bernardswiller forest. It once watched over the old Roman road from Mont Sainte-Odile to the Champ du Feu and the Bruche valley.
