La Cité Fortifiée de Langres
Langres, in the Haute-Marne, is a town perched on a spur, at the gates of Champagne and Burgundy. It is ringed by ramparts whose oldest parts go back to Antiquity and the most recent to the nineteenth century. A wall-walk of about three kilometres lets you go round the historic centre enjoying views over the surrounding countryside.
The Tour de Navarre is the most imposing artillery tower of the enclosure: it measures about 28 metres in diameter and 20 metres high, on four levels, with very thick walls and about twenty gun embrasures. It is linked to the Tour d'Orval, whose spiral ramp served to hoist cannons. The two towers, listed as historic monuments, belong to the commune. A route with audioguide, video screens and interactive terminals tells the history of the fortifications.
The Pays de Langres tourist office also offers routes designed for children.
