Gorges de la Vingeanne
The Vingeanne gorges, also called the Combe Royer gorges, are in the commune of Aprey, in the Haute-Marne, south of Langres, on the Langres limestone plateau. They cover about 78 hectares and have been on the inventory of natural sites since 1988.
This narrow, wooded valley is sometimes described as a Haute-Marne 'canyon'. The action of water on the limestone has carved a steep-sided relief that contrasts with the surrounding plateau. The Haute-Marne has several other geological curiosities linked to water running through limestone, such as the tufa formations of Rolampont and Rouvres-sur-Aube, or the Cul du Cerf at Orquevaux.
The site should not be confused with the Lac de la Vingeanne, at Villegusien-le-Lac, a reservoir opened in 1905-1906 to supply the canal between Champagne and Burgundy.
