Cascade d'Etufs

Haute-Marne, Grand Est

The Étufs waterfall is a petrifying waterfall in the commune of Rouvres-sur-Aube, in Haute-Marne, in the Aube valley, between Langres and Châtillon-sur-Seine. It lies below the castle and the farm of Étufs.

The water of a tributary of the Aube, laden with limestone, has deposited over time a porous rock called tufa, which is arranged in a succession of tiered pools. The drop is about 15 metres over a length of some fifty metres and a width of 3 to 5 metres. The limestone is deposited on the mosses that it petrifies, at a rate of a few millimetres a year, which has gradually built about twenty steps. This process of concretion makes the waterfall a natural curiosity of southern Haute-Marne, in a rolling countryside setting.
