L'Ensemble Médiéval de Narbonne
In the heart of Narbonne, in the Aude, the Archbishops' Palace, the cloister and the cathedral of Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur form a remarkable medieval monumental ensemble. The palace is both residence and fortress: it is the work of several builder archbishops and of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who designed its neo-Gothic façade. Its keep dominates the town.
The Gothic cloister links the palace to the fortified choir of the cathedral. Work began around 1350 and resumed in 1417 after an interruption; its rib-vaulted galleries open onto the archbishops' garden.
The cathedral, begun at the end of the thirteenth century, was never finished: only the choir was built.
The palace houses notably the cathedral treasury as well as archaeological collections and objets d'art. It is currently undergoing a complete renovation.
