l'Aquarium du Grand Lyon

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Aquarium du Grand Lyon is in La Mulatière, in the Lyon metropolitan area. It opened in 2002 after two years of work, on the initiative of Maurice Chichportiche, and now belongs to the Spanish group Aspro-Ocio. It receives about 200,000 visitors a year (2018 figure).

Over 2,500 m², it presents 39 ecosystems sheltering some 3,000 specimens spread over about 300 species, from freshwater fish to the animals of tropical seas. The route is organised in four main areas: the Confluence, the Tropical Voyage, the World's Reefs and Marine Curiosities.

The biggest tank is the shark tank, whose lower methacrylate window is 23 centimetres thick at the base to withstand the pressure of the water. Besides sharks, you can see other large fish and rays. The aquarium suits a family outing or a rainy day well, since the visit is indoors. It is best to check the official website for current activities.
