Gorges du Bachelard

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Bachelard gorges form the first part of the climb to the Col de la Cayolle from Uvernet-Fours, in the Ubaye valley, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The road follows the Bachelard torrent, squeezed between narrow walls, for about five kilometres. In places, it is single-track with passing places.

After the gorges, the road climbs in stages to Bayasse, then crosses alpine pastures with a series of hairpin bends, before reaching the pass, at 2,326 metres, in the Mercantour National Park. The climb, about thirty kilometres long, is famous among cyclists. As the road is narrow and offers few stops, photos are mostly taken after leaving the gorges, where you can see waterfalls, larch woods and engineering works that mark the route.
