Gorges de la Vésubie
In the Alpes-Maritimes, the hike from Cros d'Utelle to Utelle runs along the deep cut of the Vésubie gorges. It starts from the hamlet of Cros d'Utelle, near the church of the Sainte-Trinité, and follows in part a wide old path whose paving is still intact in places. The route is marked, at times in white and red on the GR 5.
The path runs along the cliffside, above the river, and crosses olive groves before reaching the lanes of the village of Utelle, with the high Gordolasque as a backdrop. You also pass near the Saint-Antoine chapel, with its glazed-tile roof, and the ruined houses of the old hamlet of Le Villard, in the shade of centuries-old chestnut trees. Depending on the variants, the loop is about 7 to 8 km and several hours' walk, with a climb that makes it fairly demanding.
