Fort de Matra
The Fort de Matra, at Aléria in the Haute-Corse, was built by the Genoese from the 14th century. A small cavalry detachment was stationed here to watch over the plain and the route to Corte.
It was listed as a historic monument in 1962, and the following year an archaeological store was set up here. Since 1978 it has housed the Jérôme Carcopino Museum, named after the Corsican historian who initiated the resumption of excavations on the ancient site of Aléria.
